MstickleThere is the sweetest dichotomy of witnessing the pungent wit of parody, next to the breathtaking allure of the finest glamour in town. There is an unrelenting and gritty appeal to diving headfirst into visceral entertainment, bellowing with sass and verve and a nature so provocative, one simply can’t look away. There is a beckoning of fascinating erudite possibility, which guide and poke and prod and reinvent and always leave you wanting more. This is Burlesque.

If you didn’t know, Burlesque is alive and kicking in New York City, and let’s face it, all over the Amber_Rayworld. Continually redefining what sexy is, but always keeping time with the most basic forms of allure, appeal, charm, magnetism and lure, Burlesque today breathes so keenly the rich and majestic history of one of the most pivotal, fun and controversial art forms in America. And this juicy hotbed of live entertainment is nestled much closer than you might think.

Dirty_MartiniThe origins of Burlesque are fairly vast and it’s history rich and complex. Though of course, gaining infamy from its most pleasurable and legendary art of striptease, it is most definitely aligned with comedy – offering home to some great comedic geniuses you may be all too familiar with like Abbott & Costello, Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton, Al Jolson and Bob Hope. Others you may have heard of who flourished with verve in this golden age of burlesque? Fanny Brice, Mae West, Sophie Tucker, Sally Rand and of course, Miss Gypsy Rose Lee.

There is a plethora of venues, performers and styles thriving on the Burlesque scene today, 7th_Annual_New_York_Burlesque_FestivalNew York City being home to some of the finest acts, drawing in entertainers and audiences from across the nation and world to be a part of this sexy mixture of sass and smarts. October 1st- 4th, NYC played host to an onslaught of the hottest of the hot at the 7th Annual New York Burlesque Festival where there was an incredible array of performances, parties, fun and even Golden Pastie Awards. Just like the days banking it, The Saturday Spectacular at BB King, hosted by the charmingly magnanimous "Superhero of Showbiz" himself, Mr. Murray Hill, was thriving with costumed crowd, frisky attitude and a dynamic bevy of Jo_Boobsbodacious bodies onstage, flirting and cavorting, the best of the best of Burlesque today.

Having a vested interest in all things NiteLife, it would be a travesty for us at NiteLifeExchange to overlook this brewing calliope of sexy and intuitively provocative performances which has been in a heated state of reviving it’s roots here in New York for at least the last ten years – reconciling, as Miss Jo Boobs has been noted to say, Burlesque’s past with its more liberated present. Stay tuned to NiteLifeExchange.com for a continuing education on all things Burlesque!
