Hello, SALON-ers!
YES! The moment
you've been waiting for is here! SALON is about to begin
again -- in the elegant lobby of the legendary ALGONQUIN HOTEL
(59 West 44th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues)! We will
now officially be called THE ALGONQUIN SALON, and I couldn't be
more excited.
Our friend, Scott
Barbarino, after attending salon last year, said that, with our emphasis on new
material and the exchange of ideas, what we were doing was "the Round
Table -- only 'round a piano.". So with the Algonquin's
amazing history, our new venue couldn't be more appropriate. Some of
you may know that this is where SALON originally began during the run of
TALK OF THE TOWN, so it's both a new beginning and a homecoming for us
all! For those of you new to the SALON experience, each evening
presents an opportunity for performers and writers to meet, network and enjoy
each others talents in a friendly, celebratory environment. All types of
material are welcome: Broadway, pop, rock, jazz, classical, opera, spoken
word, etc!. You need not sign up in advance, just come and enjoy! There
is a weekly theme designed to stimulate ideas and creativity, and we often
feature special guests and such special moments as "parody of the
week".
The grand reopening date
is MONDAY, MARCH 24th from 7 till 10 PM and will continue on EVERY MONDAY THEREAFTER. One of
the great things about this day and time is that Jim Caruso's fabulous CAST
PARTY gets rolling two blocks up 44th St. at Birdland just
about the time we'll be finishing up, so together we'll be creating our
own Monday night circuit party!
The theme for Monday,
March 24, is RENAISSANCE:
NEW BEGINNINGS! Of course, as always, performers need not stick to
the theme, but there are plenty of songs out there that could fit. And if
any writers want to compose something special or write some parody lyrics for
the occasion, that would be great, too!
Now, here's some important
info the Algonquin would like you all to know. First, there is NO
COVER and NO MINIMUM! Yes, you read that correctly.
HOWEVER, as the Algonquin is being so generous and supportive of our event, I'm
sure that all of you will want to indulge yourself by taking advantage
of the delicious drinks and fabulous food available from the Algonquin
Lobby's menu. There's a full bar for your drinking pleasure and the
"small plates" include a variety of tempting salads, burgers,
tapas, fried calamari, coconut shrimp, etc. I'm getting hungry
just writing this! There will also be a number of $10 discount tickets
for the first few performers of the evening.
Since the Algonquin
lobby is a public space, we've been asked to keep the ALGONQUIN SALON material
within the "reasonable" bounds of good taste. In other words,
bawdy and risque yes, profane and X-rated, no! This disclaimer, of
course, is unnecessary since I know how prim and proper you all truly
are! ;) Finally, we need to end each evening
at 10PM SHARP, so please come early to have as much fun as possible.
I want to thank Jessica
Poli, manager of the Oak Room, the general manager and staff of the
hotel, and Salon regular Stephen Wilde for their help in
making this dream of ours a reality. I hope as many of
you as possible will join us on MONDAY, MARCH 24th to kick off the ALGONQUIN
SALON, and will make it your regular Monday night
haunt. It's the perfect place for all those eager to share their
talents and enjoy topflight entertainment.
See you there!
Mark
