David Pellegrene
Presents!
With venues featuring new
vocalists in such short supply, it has become an additional challenge for
bookers and promoters to try to find a stage on which to present their acts.
Finding new spaces and nurturing them has truly become a labor of love. One
such mentor, is David Pellegrene, who has labored hard at it, with his love
bearing fruit at Uncle Charlie’s every Thursday night, when he presents his
weekly cabaret series. He wears all the hats; as presenter, promoter, director,
accompanist and mentor.
In a recent show,
vocalist Beth Sacks wowed the crowd, her love and respect for Mr. Pellegrene’s
support of her art, quite evident. David’s career started when he was fifteen,
and he credits the many teachers and mentors he met along the way with his
success. He hand picks the vocalists he presents, and works with them on every
detail of their performance, and this generosity of spirit is coming back to
him in a most satisfying way. His crew of vocalists, who are new and unknown in
the cabaret community, consistently rise to the occasion in their performance,
and are living proof that a whole new group of cabaret performers is out there,
just needing support to find their way. The room at Uncle Charlie’s is being
reconfigured to enhance the performance space, but in its present form, is
still quite viable. The back wall is non-existent, and the room is open to the
bar area, which can be a bit noisy. However, every time I’ve been there to see
a show, the crowd at the bar has been tamed, and become enraptured by the end
of the first song. This is a testament to David’s talent of picking, not just
good voices, but individuals with personality and presence. I’ll be there this
Thursday August 2nd to see Jacob Coronado’s debut at 8pm. Come early
for a drink, enjoy the show and then stick around afterward as David holds
court at the keys with an open mic. He is a most gracious host, generous with
his spotlight and a wonderful accompanist. So, if you’re so inclined…get up and
sing.
The schedule for August
is:
8/2 Jacob Coronado – 8/9
Antonio Edwards – 8/16 Tyler Ramage – 8/23 Blythe Gruda
On a personal note, I am
especially looking forward to seeing Antonio Edwards’ performance, since he
worked for me at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, and has one of the purist sounds I’ve
ever heard. Guess I’m going two weeks in a row.
