Sheera Ben-David

Sheera Ben-David, who brought her cabaret show to the Metropolitan Room last night, has a big voice and a big personality. She studied musical theatre at NYU TISCH and acting at the Stella Adler conservatory, and also serves as a part-time Cantor in Rockland County. She brings those skills she acquired in her studies, along with a saucy confidence and winning honesty, to her act.  When she sings, her full concentration is evident in her performance, bringing a freshness to each song whether it’s by the Bergmans or Sondheim or Carly Simon. I dare any new songwriter to pass off a poor lyric on her because her diction is perfect, so you’re going to hear every word she sings.

It’s easy to see why the Algonquin chose to book her, even though she was narrowly edged out of their only Young Artist Competition. I have the impression that with a little honing of her material, she will be playing the major rooms in short order. If I have any quibble, it’s that I saw in her patter a natural comedic ability which I wish she would bring more of to her musical material.  A few more up songs and comedy numbers and a few less ballads should do the trick, even though she performs those ballads flawlessly. But Ms. Ben-David is definitely going places.

I also have to add that she receives a huge assist from her brother, Adam, at the piano with whom she has a wonderful rapport, and her bassist, Mat Fieldes. Try and catch her the next time she is booked. You won’t regret it.
