Nothing could have possibly topped Les Paul's ninety-second birthday party at the Iridium last year...except possibly for his ninety-third on Monday.  Rather than hold some sort of special gala event, the Iridium wisely had Paul do what he does best: play music, crack wise, and banter with guest stars.

Fans began lining up at 3:30 pm to get in to the 8:00 show, and the room was densely packed.  No one complained, however; instead, strangers chatted and shared stories about Les, his music, and what he meant to every person in the room.

When the man himself emerged and took his customary seat stage left, the formerly calm crowd went wild.  Performing, as always, with Lou Pallo on guitar, Nicki Parrott on bass and John Colianni on piano, he sailed through such classics as "Brazil," "September Song," and "I Can't Get Started" before an enormous cake was brought out (fortunately for the Iridium's fire insurance, with only one candle).  "I am so happy to be here on earth," Paul said with a genuine and warm smile. "Now bring that mother over here so I can blow it out."

"Embraceable You" followed, with Paul reacting hilariously to Pallo's utterly charming rendition of the lyrics.  As they did last year, Tommy Emmanuel and Christian House stopped by to each play a song: "Jack Magic" from Emmanuel (a new, original piece) and "Sunny" from House.  Sonya Hensley sang a fierce "Route 66," and Nicki Parrot ("a great ass...et to the group," as Paul called her) sang an original song that echoed Paul's teasing right back at him. ("He's got a great big... heart/ But I've heard his heart is not his biggest part!")    A bright and fun "Blue Skies" was followed by a surprisingly poignant "Over the Rainbow" and two renditions of "Tennessee Waltz," one fast and one slow.    The set ended, as all of Les Paul's concerts do, with a freewheeling and fun "Sweet Georgia Brown," a song that still captures the spirit and fun of any Monday night at the Iridium.  No fan of jazz, rock or music in general could have asked for more. Here's looking forward to the celebration of his ninety-fourth birthday!
