It was a good Sunday for talent. I started my day out by hearing the
wonderful Laurie Krauz at Barry Levitt's Jazz Brunch at the Iridium and
even got invited up by Barry to sit in for a few tunes. This is a great
way to spend your Sunday Brunch...a really good buffet and a WONDERFUL
jazz singer like Laurie and it just does not get any better. Barry's
band is amazing.
Then, at 4:00, I saw THE most delightful show down at the Metropolitan Room by a gal by the name of Susan Winter. I sang at the MetroJam a few weeks ago and Susan got up and did a few numbers and just blew me away. I had never seen her before but she could swing like nobody's business and she just has this delicious, strong and soulful voice of truth. I decided to check out her show based on this first impression at the Jam and wow were my instincts right. Susan is obviously a seasoned singer vocally and is definitely on the jazzier side of the coin but her show called "Million Dollar Matinee" is a clever, interesting and really well-sung show comprised of tunes all coming from various shows that Susan grew up watching. She is charming and straight forward and funny and since the show is directed by Lina Koutrakos, the flow is flawless. Rick Jensen is his always fabulous self on piano/vocals. This was one classy, great show where Cabaret meets Jazz head on and I want everyone to take their dads out for Father's Day on Sunday, June 17th at 4:00 pm to see this show. Take him from brunch first and then to this show...what a fun day it will be for you both. This show will be right up his alley music wise and you will fall in love with this wonderful woman just like I did. For reservations call: 212-206-0440. Sue Matsuki, New York |
