"Tapestry Rewoven" The Songs of Carole King Laurie Krauz and the Daryl Kojak Octet Reviews

With “Tapestry Rewoven,” the songs of Carole King re-imagined in her own jazz style, vocalist Laurie Krauz and the Daryl Kojak Octet have been heating up the first Tuesdays of each month at Iridium Jazz Club for the past seven months. From the moment Miss Krauz appears on stage, this is HER room.

Iridium, the legendary New York Jazz Club, is the perfect venue for this show and this singer, with her exceptional voice and her commanding presence tempered by her genuine charm. The statuesque brunette, backed by the estimable pianist Daryl Kojak and some fine sidemen and back-up vocalists, took stage and owned the enthusiastic audience with her first number. She never let down through the hour-long program of the best loved songs of the remarkable Carole King.

Certainly a departure from the way the songs were originally presented, the jazz stylings of Krauz and Kojak and the group were a perfectly natural progression, so seamlessly and imaginatively were the American Pop Idiom and the American Jazz Idiom combined in this respectful and highly satisfying amalgam of disparate styles. The audience “ate it with a spoon” and showed their love and enthusiasm with a standing ovation, hoots and hollers.

This show is truly a group effort. Laurie Krauz shone like the star she is and allowed plenty of room for her pianist/arranger Daryl Kojak to show his considerable talents along with his team of first-rate sidemen – Michael Bates (bass), Gene Lewin (drums), Jamie Fox (guitar) and standout “Sweet” Sue Terry (sax & flute), plus three attractive back-up singers – Margaret Dorn, Karen Lord and Kathryn Lloyd.
