Emily__McNamaraEmily McNamara, an emerging cult goddess of the gay demi-monde, quipped and vamped her way through a riotous set at Vlada on May 26, 2009. Despite her protestations that due to a bronchial condition she was not at the top of her game vocally – there was little, if any, evidence of this – Ms. McNamara delivered witty embellishments on several Madonna and Mariah Carey tunes, spiced up by charmingly vulgar asides.

Ms. McNamara, standing well over 6 feet in platform shoes, weighing somewhere in the negative numbers, with gloriously long blonde hair and a wide gold sash around what she claimed was a waist, is a trained singer who, with alarming speed and seeming effortlessness, negotiated a standing split mid note.

Ms. McNamara’s set was further enlivened by guest spots from Bradley White-Dale whose somewhat gravelly, yet wistfully expressive powerhouse voice, places him squarely within the ranks of the Emily_McNamaraacclaimed blue-eyed soul singers of the 60’s.

Cary Von Murray’s “When Something is Wrong with My Baby” was delivered with such soulful ferocity and stunning technical command that it called to mind Al Green’s show-stealing performance of “”A Change is Gonna Come” at the opening of the Rock and Roll hall of Fame.

Emily – who performs as if she should be a one-name phenomenon- is a gifted entertainer capable of succeeding in a variety of contexts.

The artistic and career choices she makes will be followed with great interest by her rapidly expanding circle of devotees.
