By George W Carroll

This CD project contains some compelling writing from an equally compellingupright bass player. I know from whence I write that Thomsonis certainly one of the heavies in the area of upright bass support. He was mysideman at the famed Iridium jazz club/NY City, along with drummer extraordinaireSteve Davis, and the haunting jazz harmonica talents of Boston based Ralph Rosen.

Thomson writes with immense power in itself. His Mazurka for the modern man isextroadinarily impressive in its suspense and restless intensity, as well as its variety of mood and meditative atmosphere. In addition, thereare moments of ethereal beauty and extraordinary profundity intersperced throughout the project. Thomson's sidemen addto the combined effort and create the utmost of 'space' for an already viable and I feel successful volley of jazz orig's.
